Interview Coder and Cluely both sit in the “AI assistant for live interviews” category, but they are priced and refunded very differently. The biggest differences are not features. They are how much you pay, what happens if you want your money back, and how broad the product is meant to be.

A note on method, up front: this is a research-based comparison, not a hands-on review. The SyntaxCue team has not installed or used Interview Coder or Cluely in a real or practice interview, so you will not find “when we tested it” claims here, and we say nothing about answer quality, speed, or accuracy because we have no measurements. Everything below comes from each vendor’s public pricing and policy pages as of our last check (Interview Coder on 2026-10-01, Cluely on 2026-09-28, prices re-confirmed 2026-10-03). Prices change without notice, so confirm on the vendor’s site before you pay. For more detail on each product, see our Interview Coder review and Cluely review.

Quick answer

  • Interview Coder if you want a product that lists LeetCode and system design interviews, a lifetime plan option, and you are fine with a high price and no refund.
  • Cluely if you want a broader assistant (it also does meeting notes), a much lower entry price, an iPhone app, and a short refund window.
  • Neither if you want to use your own API key. Both are managed products.

Price and refund: the biggest practical difference

At the entry level the gap is large. Interview Coder’s monthly plan is $299/month, and its lifetime plan is $799 once. Cluely Pro is $19.99/month. For the full plan table and the lifetime break-even math, see Interview Coder pricing.

The refund rules matter as much as the price. Interview Coder’s policy says all sales are final, with no time window and no conditions, and that includes the $799 lifetime plan (see what to test before paying). Its stated reasons are that lifetime is a one-time deal and that you can download the app free first. Cluely allows a refund within 24 hours, but only if you can show video evidence that the software is not working on your computer. Its policy (last updated April 2025) says slow answer generation is not refundable, and it offers no refunds on Windows 10.

Do not read this as a pure value comparison. Cluely’s $19.99 Pro plan is not the same thing as its $149.99 top tier, which is the one with screen-share privacy, and neither is directly equivalent to Interview Coder’s plans. If you compare like for like on the paid top tier, Cluely is $149.99/month (or $539.88/year), still well below $299/month, but the feature sets differ.

On billing risk, there is one documented Trustpilot complaint about a roughly $500 annual renewal charged with no confirmation screen shown first. It is one reported case, not evidence of a general practice, but it is a good reason to check renewal settings on any subscription. We found no documented public complaints about Interview Coder, so we list none.

Who Interview Coder fits

  • You want a product built around interview help (its plans list LeetCode and system design), not a general meeting tool.
  • You prefer a one-time lifetime plan to a subscription.
  • You are comfortable with the no-refund policy. The free download lets you check the app and audio setup before paying, though the AI features stay locked until you do.

Main minus: the highest monthly price in this comparison, no refund even on the lifetime plan, and no BYOK.

Who Cluely fits

  • You want one assistant for interviews and meetings, not only coding.
  • A low entry price matters. There is a free Starter tier and a $19.99 Pro plan.
  • You want an iPhone app and a cloud dashboard with session history.

Main minus: no BYOK, a 24-hour refund window with a video-proof requirement (slowness and Windows 10 are excluded), and a large price jump to the top tier with screen-share privacy.

How to choose

  1. Interviews only, or meetings too? Interview Coder is interview-focused. Cluely also covers meeting notes.
  2. How much does a refund matter? Interview Coder has none. Cluely gives 24 hours with proof of a defect. Neither gives you time to judge the tool over several interviews.
  3. Do you need a mobile app or saved sessions? Cluely has both. Interview Coder has no mobile app we could find.
  4. What is your monthly budget? $19.99 for Cluely Pro against $299 for Interview Coder, but check the feature tier before treating them as equal.
  5. Subscription or one payment? Interview Coder has a lifetime plan. Cluely is subscription only.
  6. Do you want to pay for your own API usage? Neither supports it.

If neither fits: SyntaxCue

If the reason you are comparing the two is that you want a desktop app for technical interviews with your own API key, SyntaxCue is a third option. It is $79 once for a six-month license with no automatic renewal. You use your own OpenAI or Anthropic API key and pay that provider directly. Audio is transcribed locally, with no backend in the audio path. Refunds run 14 days with no conditions.

It is deliberately narrower than both products above: macOS and Windows desktop only, no mock-interview mode, no mobile app, no Linux, no server-side session history, and a six-month license rather than a lifetime one. If you need a mobile app or cloud history, pick Cluely; if you want a lifetime plan, pick Interview Coder. Which is better, Interview Coder or Cluely?

Neither is better for everyone. Interview Coder is interview-focused and has a lifetime plan, but it costs $299/month and has a no-refund policy. Cluely is broader, has a lower entry price, an iPhone app, and cloud session history, but has only a 24-hour refund window. We have not tested either, so we make no claim about answer quality or speed.

Is Cluely cheaper than Interview Coder?

At the entry level, yes. Cluely Pro is $19.99/month and Interview Coder is $299/month as of our last check. Cluely's top tier with screen-share privacy is $149.99/month or $539.88/year, still lower than $299/month, but the plans are not feature-for-feature equivalent, so price alone does not show which is better value.

Which one has a refund policy?

Cluely allows a refund within 24 hours only with video evidence that the software is not working on your computer; slow answer generation and Windows 10 are not refundable. Interview Coder says all sales are final, with no time window or conditions, including on its $799 lifetime plan.

Do Interview Coder or Cluely support bringing your own API key?

No. Both are managed products. Interview Coder lists no option to use your own API key, and Cluely is a managed cloud product.

Is there an alternative to both?

Yes. SyntaxCue is a macOS and Windows desktop app with BYOK, local transcription, a one-time $79 payment for a six-month license, and a 14-day refund. It has no mock-interview mode, no mobile app, and no Linux support, and its license is not lifetime.

Is this page based on hands-on testing?

No. The SyntaxCue team has not installed or used Interview Coder or Cluely in a real or practice interview. This is a research-based comparison of public pricing, platform, and policy information as of our last check.
